Hello everyone,

Despite efforts, the Louisiana Senate failed to move the Equal Rights Amendment forward. The support coming from the state was massive, as was the coverage in the local news and media, so there were plenty of wins to come from this effort. We will keep up our efforts to bring greater awareness and support for the ERA in Louisiana, and many other states that are

ERA in the News: April 12-18, 2019
IMG-2612.JPG

Hello ERA Advocates!

Our biggest piece of news this week comes from API’s Advocacy Committee, as we announced our first-ever ERA Day (!!) event to be hosted by the Alice Paul Institute. Please join us at on June 30, 2019 at the home of Alice Paul, the author of the Equal Rights Amendment, as we reclaim the day that the ERA failed to ratify to the U.S. Constitution and offer women and men equal legal protections in America.

This amazing event is an opportunity to learn more about the ERA and celebrate the untold number of activists who have persisted for decades in the fight for equal rights! ERA Day will feature a dynamic panel discussion led by legal professionals and ERA advocates who will highlight the history of the ERA and current efforts across the nation to ratify it.

Attendees will also have a great opportunity to meet and connect with local and regional organizations working to advance equal rights, and attend a fun craft fair featuring women artists and vendors. We'll wrap the day with a networking cocktail hour and 80's-themed dance party!

We’ll share more information as the event gets closer, but in the meantime, please feel free to pass along the event information to any craft and business vendors (based in the Philadelphia metro region) or businesses interested in sponsoring this dynamic event. Tickets will be on sale soon!

Happy end of Women's History Month! It's been very inspiring to hear stories of historical women from across the country this month and we look forward to channeling that energy into the rest of the year.

This week was exciting as we saw news coverage in states that haven't had any ERA news at all in 2019, including Rhode Island, Washington, and New Mexico. As of the end of the first quarter only seven states are missing ERA coverage in 2019: Alabama, Iowa, Montana, South Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

ERA In The News This Week:

ERA news was spread across the country this week. We also saw exciting news out of Minnesota, as the House passed a state version the Equal Rights Amendment (Minnesota passed the federal ERA in 1973). The initiative will move to a public vote in 2020.

In North Dakota, which passed the federal ERA in 1975, voted this past week to declare the ERA unviable due the amendments failure to ratify before the original 1979 deadline. The move is largely in a symbolic gesture due to the lack of legal precedent for states to legally rescind an amendment that passed a state house. Read more about it below.

Exciting news in the sports world as the US Women's National Team sued the US Soccer Federation for "institutionalized gender discrimination." The highest paid woman on the USWNT makes $72,000, compared to recently retired USMT player Clint Dempsey who earned $406,000 the same year and failed to qualify for World Cup play. Please read the article here.
